Call it Love?

I know it’s been years since we were together,
But I’ve never stopped speculating
That we’d given it a name as twisted as love,
We’d have destroyed it;
And just as easily.
Had we said it to each other,
You’d have been my lover and I’d have been your dangerous hope
And maybe I’d have gone to the ends of the earth for you
And maybe you’d have walked over glass to find me,
But deep down somewhere I’d still have known
That we’d have obliterated it
Had we called it love.
I’m glad we left it someplace reasonable enough to be untainted
Somewhere, sealed into a box of chocolates, a case full of dust caught books, in the first rays of the rising sun
And I’m happy we kept it that way
Because I’d have fallen to my temper,
You’d have forfeited to your hurt.
And we’d have dragged everything we cared for into the crossfire
Had we called it love.
Today I see you in sad songs,
On promising sunny days,
Nightfalls,
And in all the little things;
Knowing that if we’d called it love,
We’d have destroyed it.
